TREND SPOTTING: RED CARPET EDITION

WE’RE TAKING A LOOK AT THIS YEARS TRENDS AND SHOWSTOPPING LOOKS FROM THE 2019 AWARDS SEASON THUS FAR.

With awards season in full swing, the red carpet spectacle has returned. And although the spotlight is primarily on those nominated for their achievements in the film and music industry this year, the attention is just as much on the fashion choices of our favorite stars. It is the perfect time for celebrities and fashion leaders to make a statement of individuality and personal style. Lady Gaga is a seasoned veteran when it comes to bringing the wow factor to the red carpet, infamous in serving the most outrageous, theatrical and dramatic looks over the past decade. If we travel back in time to the GRAMMY’s in 2011 Gaga didn’t set foot on the red carpet herself, she was carried down it in an egg shaped vessel. It was certainly a statement, even if we’re not sure what that statement was.

Every year there is a showcase of eccentric yet spectacular looks that immediately grab the attention of the media, but there are also noticeable trends that emerge among the chaos that often carry through the rest of the season.

50 SHADES OF BLUE AT THE GOLDEN GLOBES

The 76th Golden Globes essentially kick-started the 2019 awards season. At last year’s Golden Globes, many women chose to wear black in support of the “Times Up” initiative against sexual assault in Hollywood. But there was no blackout at this years red carpet, in fact it was full of sparkling, radiant fashion choices.

Lady Gaga did not disappoint at this year’s Golden Globes. She took the red carpet by storm wearing a stunning strapless Valentino Haute Couture gown in a periwinkle shade.

The princess line style ball gown featured large puffed off-the-shoulder sleeves and a deluging train. The look gave off some serious Cinderella vibes twisted with the extravagance of Versailles 18th Century gowns. The elegance of the strapless dress was complimented with a custom Tiffany & Co. diamond necklace named ‘The Aurora’, and cluster diamond earrings. Fans also noticed a subtle similarity between Gaga’s look and a dress worn by Judy Garland in the original ‘A Star Is Born’ movie in 1954.

While her look was not as wild and unearthly as we would expect from ‘Mother Monster’, she certainly dressed to impress and gave the look her own personal twist by rocking blue hair in a similar shade to the dress and by sporting custom-made skyscraper silver lace-up boots by Giuseppe Zanotti, hidden underneath the elegant dress of course.

Gaga was not the only woman feeling the blues at the Golden Globes. ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ actress Gemma Chan also wore an elegant halter neck Valentino Couture gown, only this one was more of a dark teal color and wasn’t actually a gown… The dress opened at the waist to reveal shorts!

Shorts don’t really seem appropriate for a ceremony like the Golden Globes, but the opening in the dress showed us the matching Christian Louboutin court heels that complimented simplicity of the dress fabric. The back of the dress featured a large bow tied high up above her shoulders and there were pockets too! It was overall very modern (and slightly weird) yet Chan looked polished and elegant. Good job Valentino!

There were countless other beautiful blue hues spotted on the Golden Globes red carpet. Camilla Belle wore a stunning peacock blue off-the-shoulder gown with green embroidery by Jason Wu. The matching green eye shadow really helped to accentuate the color of the embroidery against the darker blue. Alison Brie went for a light-blue V-neck tulle dress with a bejeweled bandeau underneath. The light color of the tulle and the metallic of the bandeau really created a glamorous look. Lupita Nyong’o was seen wearing a fringed Calvin Klein by Appointment dress in a royal blue shade with shiny silver accents.

POWER SUIT PERFECTION

There were of course many beautiful dresses worn at the GRAMMY’s on February 10th, but a few celebrities decided to switch it up and took on the red carpet wearing pant suits.

Miley Cyrus rocked a standout black Mugler pantsuit. The oversize blazer with a low-cut neckline and crop flared pants were paired with some gorgeous black heels that featured a metallic monogram on the heel of the stars initials. It was a very sleek and sexy look, its simplicity giving it an elegant and powerful vibe.

Brandi Carlile also wore a black suit only her long tuxedo-style blazer and matching pants were embellished with crystals, inspired by the Palace of Versailles’ Hall of Mirrors. The suit was by costume designer Maryam Malakpour and L.A based designer Johnson Hartig.

Tracee Ellis Ross wore a bold green Ralph & Russo wide leg pantsuit that featured an embellished snake around her waist while former first lady Michelle Obama made a sparkling guest appearance in a loose-fitting charcoal sequined Sachin & Babi suit.  I’m sure we will see many more interesting and colorful power suits throughout the rest of awards season… They are truly timeless.

RED TAKES OVER THE RED CARPET

Red seems to be a popular color choice for this seasons red carpet events. Lili Reinhart making her Golden Globes debut in a Khyeli couture tulle gown while Laura Dern wore a Valentino dress from the Pre-Fall 2019 collection. Its semi-sheer material and long sleeves didn’t quite bring the wow factor to the red carpet unfortunately.

At the GRAMMY’s Bebe Rexha blew us away looking curvaceous and fierce yet princess like in a in a crimson Monsoori ruffle tiered ball gown. The neckline was complimented with a diamond necklace. It was overall a very tasteful look, dramatic but in an elegant way. Tulle is taking fashion by storm!

TAKE THE PLUNGE

Another noticeable trend seems to be the plunging V-neckline.
In the image below we see Saoirse Ronan wearing a silver chain mail style Gucci dress. The plunging neckline being the main attraction of the look. Next to her we see Keri Russell sporting a shimmering silver Monique Lhuillier draping dress. The wide shoulders were not the most flattering but the dress was still a hit. Taraji P. Henson looked like a goddess in a velvet Vera Wang tight-fitting gown. Its dark green shade with the V-neck reaching down to a belted waist was very chic. Gina Rodriguez rocked a light blue Reem Acra dress with a plunging neckline outlined by silver embellishment. Rodriguez made a statement by having the words ‘Time’s Up’ written on.
