NEW YORK FASHION WEEK: Oscar De La Renta Fall 2019

Downtown New York saw the unveiling of the newest Oscar De La Renta collection on Tuesday, 12. The fashion house’s designers Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim were inspired by travel, religion and history which was evident in their choices of rich fabrics and textiles. The runway itself was inspired by the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba in Spain.

As it would be expected, the collection included some beautiful and sophisticated gowns, perfect for awards season as red carpet statement dresses. High-low hemlines seemed to be a trend among the gowns, with a feathered white dress as well as a textured navy number standing out among many other interesting designs.

Another standout look was a black strapless dress worn by the angelic Bella Hadid. She certainly looked like royalty in the velvet textured piece that perhaps took inspiration from Islamic geometric patters in architecture. We always see premier black gowns during New York Fashion Week, but there is something about this particular dress that is truly astounding, it certainly gives off some serious ‘femme fatale’ or enchantress vibes. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see who snatches this one up for the Oscars on February, 24.

The wide-leg navy jumpsuit with floral embellishment on the chest, and the black velvet dress have the same strapless neckline that look to be inspired by Islamic temple patterns. This symmetrical shape really compliments the shoulders and collar-bones of the models and looks elegant, adding flair to rather simple garments.

The show began with some beautiful day-wear with burnt oranges and navy colors taking prevalence along with plaid patterns and wide-leg pants. There was use of silks and tailored tweeds that contrasted nicely against each other creating some very modern and professional looks.

Some of the more simple designs were just as effective as the bright patterned pieces. This quilted satin material looked stylish and modern as a casual jacket over a patterned shirt with dress pants in a copper shade. But it’s smooth and glossy qualities looked just as good in formal gown form and the quilting adds texture to what would have been a pretty plain design.

The show was big on pattern designs. An array of vintage cocoon-style jackets made quite a statement with intricate botanical patterns and bright colors changing a usually simple style of outerwear into something much more exciting. Plenty of other pieces, including dresses and shirts, had similar mosaic and tapestry designs making ancient and historic patterns appear tasteful and current.

The collection was full of color and texture and although Oscar De La Renta is known so well for his high fashion luxury gowns, this fashion show really demonstrated that the designers are just as able to create day-wear and more simple garments just as worthy of the De La Renta name as any other. There was subtle 70’s aesthetic rippling throughout the collection and the yellows, burnt oranges, yellows and navy blue’s used worked so well that it could perhaps be the new color pallet of the coming season.
