NEW YORK FASHION WEEK: 2019 Round-up

All good things must come to an end, and as New York Fashion Week came to a close on Feb. 16, it’s time to take a look at the distinctive trends that emerged on the Fall 2019 runways.

WELCOME TO THE WILD SIDE

With real fur becoming a serious fashion faux-pas, designers seem to have moved to a less controversial way of incorporating animals into their designs. Bright animal inspired prints popped up in many designers collections, particularly zebra and leopard prints.

Sally Lapointe’s collection saw a series of stunning lilac snakeskin garments including loose fitting pants, a tube skirt and a suit. An emerald green zebra print jacket stood out in Rachel Comey’s show with a black fluffy collar and thin black waist tie.

Zebra print was also seen in the form of a long sleeved dress by Proenza Schouler featuring cutouts at the armpits. 3.1 Phillip Lim showed of a monochromatic overcoat with an interesting hemline and bold black collar.

Kate Spade took over leopard print territory with an array of orange, pink and purple garments. One of the standout looks was an orange print shirt paired with a matching hair wrap and wide leg dress pants accessorized with a matching orange snakeskin purse.

DO YOU PLAID GUILTY?

Plaid was another pattern that trended on the runway this year. Oscar De La Renta and Rachel Comey’s collections both included plaid pants. De La Renta’s wide leg pants worked well with an orange shirt which brought out the subtle orange tones in the black and white plaid. Comey’s high-waisted red and black plaid pants reflected her hip SoHo style. A similar black and red plaid pattern appeared on the Coach 1941 runway. The over sized jacket had a black leather outline and collar giving it an 80’s grunge vibe.

FIERCE IN FEATHER

The well known quote “birds of a feather” comes to mind when looking at the countless designers who incorporated feather-texture into their collections. Prabal Gurung put on a vibrant runway show that included some small feather details on dresses and cuffs. But the looks that stole the show were two volumized feather-textured pieces. A mini-dress made of cyan, magenta, yellow and black feathers with a black waist tie looked glamorous and gave of a serious carnival vibe. Showing off similar bright colors was a yellow jacket with khaki cuffs.

Marc Jacobs’ and Oscar De La Renta’s collections both featured a showstopping feather-textured evening gown. Oscar De La Renta designers used white feathering on a one-shoulder dress that had a high-low hemline. A black belt around the waist really helped to emphasize the sheer volume of the material. Marc Jacobs took a trip to the dark side and closed his show with a very black-swan style evening gown entirely made of black feathers.

PURPLE IS THE NEW BLACK

After surveying the New York Fashion Week runways, there seemed to be a new front-runner for this seasons favored color. Move over millennial pink because purple is taking over.

The Cushnie, Michael Kors and Christian Siriano collections all featured stunning purple evening gowns. Cushnie showed off an elegant satin evening gown with an off the shoulder neckline in a regal purple shade. Michael Kors used purple for a deep plunge neckline dress embellished with 70’s style sequins. The high-low hemline dress by Siriano was a standout look in his show, along with three other pieces in the same bright amethyst-purple shade.
