High-fashion and the glitz and glamour of Hollywood is what inspires Fashion Fatale. So what is better than a blog post to celebrate the women who dominate this sector of the fashion world?

While there are countless women who have had an enduring influence in fashion, we’ve narrowed it down to a Top 5. Take a look at some of their signature and most defining looks…

1. AUDREY HEPBURN

If you take a look at any list of fashion icons of all time, there is no doubt that Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn will be included. And rightfully so. The Roman Holiday (1953) and Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) actress is said to be just as influential in fashion today as she was in her time.

She is mostly celebrated for making the little black dress a famous trend, but that was not her only contribution to the world of fashion. Lets take a look at some of her most fabulous and impactful looks on and off the screen.

THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS (LBD)

It seems only right to start with the infamous little black dress that Hepburn wore in the opening scene of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Designed by Hubert De Givenchy, the Italian satin sheath evening gown was floor-length and sleeveless with a fitted bodice and an interesting cut-out back feature.

The dress was paired with black elbow-length satin gloves which only intensified the sheer elegance of the look. The LBD became a wardrobe essential and still is today.

The accessories were just as iconic as the gown. Hepburn wore dark tortoise shell sunglasses by Oliver Goldsmith which came to be another signature part of the look. She also wore a five-strand pearl necklace designed by Lane, and a miniature tiara made of rhinestones and pearls.

SIMPLY CHIC

Hepburn had a truly timeless take on formal dressing. In 1954, she wore a white floral Givenchy dress to the Oscars where she won the Best Actress award for Roman Holiday. The simple boat-neckline dress was adorned with delicate floral embroidery and had a tight belt that accentuated her slim figure.

Hepburn earns a place on Fashion Fatale’s Top 5 Fashion Icons list for her her timeless grace and chic, simple style that stole the hearts of many.

2. MARILYN MONROE

Marilyn Monroe is another of America’s most beloved actresses who is also one of the most renowned fashion icons of all time.

In the 50’s she became one the biggest fashion muses in Hollywood and the embodiment of glamour. With her curvaceous figure and bomb-shell blonde curls she attained sex-symbol status and captivated people all over the world with her beauty, style and shining femininity.

Here are a few of Monroe’s fabulous looks that were instrumental in her lasting impact on style…

QUEEN OF SATIN

At the premiere of Call Me Madam (1953) Monroe wore a figure hugging white satin column dress. With matching white satin pumps, elbow length gloves and a white stoat stole she looked angelic. Not a single piece of jewelry was worn because there was no need for a distraction from her beauty and her elegant attire.

While the white satin dress was breathtaking, Monroe wore a shocking pink satin gown during the most famous scene of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes as the gold-digging showgirl “Lorelai Lee”. Strapless, belted and paired with matching elbow length gloves, it was of very similar shape to the white satin dress she wore in 1953 but featured a large bow on the back. Singing “Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend”, the look was completed with plenty of diamond jewelry.

The Queen of Pop (Madonna) mimicked Monroe’s look and performance in her music video for “Material Girl”. Not to mention, did you see how many women wore bright pink gowns to the 2019 Academy Awards? This look has had lasting influence in pop culture and at red carpet events through the decades.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. PRESIDENT

Marilyn Monroe is the icon known for turning the ‘Naked Dress’ into a trend. In 1962, Monroe performed at John F. Kennedy’s 45th birthday at Madison Square Garden. While the sultry and intimate rendition of “Happy Birthday To You” was an iconic performance that sparked many rumors of a scandalous affair, the gown she wore was even more legendary.

Designed by Jean Louis, the nude dress was skin-tight and made of silk gauze, embellished with 6,000 hand-sewn rhinestones. It was so tight that Monroe wore nothing under it and she had to be sewn into it before the event. This dress is claimed to be one of the most iconic pieces in pop-culture history because it was so scandalous. It also became one of the most expensive dresses of all time selling at $4.81 million in an auction.

Marilyn Monroe had a truly unforgettable sense of fashion during a time of oppressed sexuality. She more than earns her spot on Fashion Fatale’s Top 5 list as an icon of style, elegance and seduction.

3. CHER

The only thing that competes with this award-winning singers voice is her bold, statement-making fashion sense. Cher’s unique and daring style has turned heads for almost six decades, serving as inspiration for emerging designers and style icons alike. Known in pop-culture as ‘the Goddess of Pop’, in the fashion world she’ became known for her glamour and fearlessness to show skin on the red-carpet.

THE DRESS THAT CAUSED A STIR

One of Cher’s most notable looks was a sheer beaded dress with a feathered trim and sleeves that she wore to the 1974 Met Gala. Designed by Robert Mackie, the incredible gown left nothing to the imagination and captivated the public and the media for weeks after.

In 1975 Cher wore the same scandalous nude gown in a cover shoot for Time magazine. At that time, the cover was usually reserved for world leaders, inventors and other important figures. So when Cher made the cover it caused a huge stir and the issue was even banned in some cities earning her newsstand notoriety.

Many stars and designers have credited Cher’s style as a source of inspiration for their own show-stopping red carpet dresses; Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian and Dua Lipa being just some of many.

DARING DIVA

You can count on Hollywood’s stars to wear beautiful pieces to the Academy Awards, but Cher was in a league of her own. Year after year, she set foot on the red carpet and stole the show completely, pushing the boundaries of fashion.

Three of her most talked about looks of all time were all by her go-to designer Bob Mackie. In 1973 she wore a gold jeweled two-piece set showing of her toned, slim midriff. She looked like a modern day Cleopatra.

In 1974, she took to the red carpet again, this time showing plenty of skin in a skirt and matching bra like top. Its sheer, watercolor fabric made it look like beachwear. But Cher being Cher, she managed to transform it into a jaw-dropping Oscars look with a matching cape and elaborate flower pieces in her hair and around her neck.

One of her most dramatic looks of all time was worn in 1986 to present the Best Supporting Actor award. In a bead embellished black two-piece, a satin shawl and huge black feathered headdress she looked like Maleficent had been hit with a glamour stick. She definitely set the bar high for outrageous award show fashion.

Cher’s daring and fabulous style changed the celebrity fashion game. Her looks over the decades fully embodied her confidence and diva status leaving a legacy that is indisputable. She took risks in fashion and constantly caused a commotion which is exactly why she is a style icon.

5. LADY GAGA

Lady Gaga is considered one of the worlds most controversial fashion icons. The award winning singer (and now actress) has consistently made an impact on the world of fashion with a very avante-garde approach since her entrance to the Hollywood scene in 2008. Whether it be in concert, on the red carpet or on the street, Gaga always makes a lasting statement. Lets take a look four of her weird and wonderful looks…

QUEEN LIZZY AND LATEX

In 2009, Gaga headlined at the annual Royal Variety Performance. You would think in the presence of royalty the star would perhaps tone down her eccentric style. But no. Gaga dressed as royalty herself and showed true gall, paying an outlandish tribute to Queen Elizabeth I in a gothic red latex gown.

WIGGING OUT IN WHITE

In 2010, Gaga attended the Brit Awards wearing a white three-tiered sculptural gown by Francesco Scognamiglio. But obviously the dress was not statement enough for Gaga so she also wore a lace veil and a huge Marie Antoinette pouf wig.

STEAKS ARE HIGH

It goes without question that Lady Gaga’s meat dress is one of the biggest statement making outfits in fashion history. The raw beef dress was designed by Franc Fernandez and paired with matching shoes, a purse and a hat and some stunning diamond jewelry.

Although it gained plenty of negative attention from animal-rights activists, it was named the top fashion statement of 2010 by Time magazine. The meaning behind the dress, as Gaga explained on her interview with Ellen was, “If we don’t fight for our rights pretty soon, we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on own bones.”

RED CARPET OR RED LIGHT DISTRICT?

Every year the Grammy’s red carpet is filled with stunning gowns but in 2017 Lady Gaga went in the complete opposite direction like the fashion rebel she is. Adorned in black leather, she wore a backless crocodile-print jacket with a fringed collar and arms showing off more than just a little under-boob.

The bottom portion of the look included a glossy leather leotard, fishnet tights and thigh-high latex platform heels giving a biker chic/courtesan vibe. Finishing off the look with black aviator sunglasses and a messy pink streaked ponytail, it was far from conventional.

Gaga’s self-expression through fashion is both empowering and freeing. She channels past icons and famous characters in many of her looks but always gives it her own bizarre but glamorous twist. And although her recent style has evolved from her wild and notorious looks of the past, she always manages to add a little bit of the old Gaga to every ensemble leaving the fashion world in a frenzy.

5. RIHANNA

Rihanna is another modern day fashion icon and trend setter who is an integral part of fashions most important events every year. Whether it be edgy street-style getup’s or glamorous red carpet gowns, she never fails to show up and stun the world with her amazing sense of style.

TAKING STREET FASHION BY STORM

Denim on denim is always a risk. But Rihanna showed us exactly how its done well when she was spotted in the Big Apple back in 2018. Wearing light denim ripped mom jeans and a cropped denim shirt she made out of a skirt, she added the Rihanna flair by wearing a white Fenty satin top underneath and a stunning pink Marc Jacobs flower collared coat.

In 2015, Rihanna mean business as she stepped out in head-to-toe Barbie pink. The ensemble included a Pascal Millet slim-fitting jumpsuit and a matching blazer with a pink fur shawl. Its often difficult to pull off such a vibrant color but Rihanna does it with ease.

Who says green and pink don’t go together? Well, Rihanna definitely doesn’t. In 2017, the star strolled around in New York rocking a light pink hoodie and matching sweatpants along with a bright green snakeskin trench.

RED CARPET RIRI

Even though her fearless and edgy street-style looks gain so much attention, her ability to create jaw-dropping red carpet looks is as strong.

The Met Gala is one of the most exciting fashion events of the year. We get to see our favorite stars dress to impress in a way that incorporates the theme of the gala. In 2015, Rihanna stole the show in a dress designed by Guo Pei. In an imperial yellow fur-trimmed cape with floral embroidery she looked like royalty.

Another iconic Rihanna fashion moment was at the 2014 CFDA Awards. She chose to go bra-less in a completely sheer skin-tight Adam Selman dress that was covered in over 200,000 Swarovski crystals. It was paired with a matching head wrap, elbow-length gloves and a fur scarf. The sexy, shimmering gown left nothing to the imagination and shocked everyone. When asked about it, she said her only regret was that she didn’t wear a bedazzled thong.

At the 4th annual Diamond Ball, Rihanna showed off her cool girl glam style wearing a
lace jumpsuit with a satin overlay skirt that looked like a bow. It was designed by
Alexis Mabille Couture and paired with some white heeled sandals and diamond jewelry.

There is not a single moment that the star disregards style and she is the epitome of the saying ‘its not what you wear, it’s how you wear it’. Rihanna is a fashion icon because she wears what she whats, whenever she wants.
